iRobot has released the new Looj gutter cleaning robot starting at just $99.99 for the Looj 120 and announced the new ConnectR remote presence robot, which looks like a Roomba with an eye on it.
The ConnectR will start with a limited number of folks willing to be research guinea pigs at $199 in 2007 and will debut as a roughly $499 device at some point in the future. (IF you haven't already signed up, too late!)
It's a very interesting concept that I think would be exciting for folks who travel alot but would like to check out what's going on at home, as well as check on grandma, latchkey kids, watch for robbers, keep an eye on the nanny, etc. You need WiFi and high-speed Internet access, natch. The Looj is a lot more interesting than it looks in black and white, and the price is perfect at $99.99 for the base Looj 120. The Deluxe Looj 150 model with two batteries is $169.99 and ships free through the banner link. The mid-range Looj 130 is $129.99. I think they might actually sell some of these. It works via remote. I could see several neighbors getting together and buying one of these and sharing. Although I still think that the chief value will be increased exposure for the iRobot brand because of all the reviews it'll generate. (Note: The Looj will be available at key retailers starting in a week or two so you might want to hold off on buying one just yet.) I'm curious what Consumer Reports will make of this?
More to come later...
